I have been very lucky on the technical side, in that Penfold set up my blog for me and has given me advice along the way. [Recently the words 'you could stop now' have been uttered several times]
There is so much going on 'out there', that it is extremely difficult to decide in which direction to head. I have always maintained the ethos of having some fun and exploring the medium as you would any other.
I have also been extremely lucky with the people who have joined in. My comment box has become a very funny and enjoyable source of flimflam and repartee. This is largely due to the community of bloggers associated with Fuelmyblog [there are some notable exceptions to this from 'outside' - Zoe and Chicken Licken for instance].
Looking round 'blogworld', away from the Fuelmyblog community, there are an awful lot of people who don't have the fun feedback that some of us enjoy, which is a great shame. I actively encourage people I happen across whilst surfing, to sign up with FMB, so that they can join in the mix. Mind you, you have to make some noise in there to get attention - there are so many blogs registered, it's easy to get overlooked. (No it's not, you just have a natural instinct for making a nuisance of your self. Sylvie is very good at pointing people towards interesting blogs.

If you have stumbled across this blog today and you're feeling a bit fed up and on your own, have a look at the FMB site. You may find it's difficult joining in at first - I did - believe it or not!! Look at me now - I am the Official Pain in the Backside [along with Fracas and 70's obviously]. (I don't know about 70's and Fracas but I'll vouch for Peabrain's PitBS status. Lo'TG Ed) If you don't know what I'm talking about, go to the Fuelmyblog site and see how long it takes you to find out what I mean.
